Participating in the FIA Formula One World Championship’s inaugural Indian Grand Prix weekend by racing in the Formula MRF Championship support category, he then returned to Britain for the Formula Renault UK ‘Finals Series’ where he finished fourth overall and achieved his maiden podium.
Dovetailing Formula Renault with a part season in the InterSteps Championship in 2012, where he was a multiple podium finisher, Walkinshaw also raced in the Formula BMW Asia Series before making an outstanding Formula 3 debut in the MSV F3 Cup where he took a double win at Anglesey.
Graduating full-time into F3 the following year in the Copa Class of the European F3 Open, he raced to a pair of podium finishes and then stepped-up into the main championship for 2014 where he was a consistent front-runner.
As well as following in his father Tom’s wheeltracks as a racer, Sean is also a team owner like Walkinshaw Snr having established SWR at the end of 2012 to run a three-car entry in the BRDC Formula 4 Championship, which latterly became the BRDC Formula 3 Championship.
In 2017 the team expanded into GT4 endurance racing in Europe and for the 2018 season SWR debuted in the new TCR UK Championship, returning the Walkinshaw name to touring car competition in Britain for the first time since TWR’s heyday in the legendary ‘Super Touring’ era.
Put simply, Sean was born to be a racer…it’s in the Walkinshaw blood!
